1774, Two John Boydell engravings, colored, after Claude de Lorrain.
Two interesting engravings from Liber Veritatis, colored. It’s know that in 1777 Boydell printed Liber Veritatis, which chronicled the paintings of Claude Lorrain. What is interesting: these two prints were published in 1774, they lack the titles at the bottom of the 1777 prints, and obviously come from a book (evidenced by the binding marks on #52). Was there an earlier, cruder, Liber Veritatis, published in 1774? To answer my own question, Worldcat registers one copy in the world’s libraries (at the National Library of South Africa), OCLC #1017393346, printed in 1774.The two prints here for sale are:#3 – A Landscape with Banditti Attacking Travelers on the Highway#52 – A Hilly Country Physical Attributes – Each measures approx. 34 x 27.5 cm. Laid paper. Colored. Condition – See pictures. They are not folded, but about every other condition exists. Paper is toned. Foxing from tape at all edges. Some chipping at edges. Pencil note at top of both (“x3”, “x4”). Black spot in bottom margin of plate 52. Bookbinding stitching noticeable at top of 52, has been trimmed away from 3.
